First supervisor: Indri Anastasia, S.S., M.A., M.Ed and second supervisor: Melati, S.Pd., M.C.C. Key Words: Teacher’s techniques, motivation, vocational high school. The purposes of this qualitative study were to gain knowledge about teacher’s techniques to motivate SMKN 3 students in learning English and to find student’s opinion about techniques that used by English teacher at SMKN 3 Jambi.Data in this thesis were collected through classroom observation and interview with the English teacher and students as the participants of this research. The data from interview section were analyzed by transcribing the data, became familiar with the data, coding, theming and reporting (Darlington & Scott 2002). There were six major themes about techniques to motivate vocational high school students in learning English which found in this case study research, such as creating a fun classroom atmosphere, using games, giving compliments and additional score, using media, giving rewards (gift), explaining to the students about how useful English. From all techniques that teacher used in motivating students, there is one technique that was not relevant with students’ interview result and classroom observation result, which is teaching English using game. While, the techniques that often used by the teacher in the classroom is giving compliments.
