Abstract
The study aim to determine the effect of the use of Azolla powder up to level 15% in the ration of body weight gain and first egg lay in Japanese quail. This study was conducted at Farm of Animal Science Faculty of Jambi University for six weeks, from 15 September to 24 October, 2017. The study was used 160 twenty one-day-old female quails from Pagardrum, Jambi. The treatments were: P0 (0% Azolla powder in the ration), P1 (5% Azolla powder in ration), P2 (10% Azolla powder in ration), P3 (15% Azolla powder in ration). The experimental design used was Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 4 treatments and 5 replications. The observed variables were feed intake, body weight, body weight gain, ration conversion, and first egg lay. The data obtained were analyzed by various analysis according to the experiment. The treatment that significantly affected the observed variables was followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test. The results showed that the use of Azolla powder up to 15% in the ration had significant effect (P <0.05) on the first egg lay in Japanese quail and no significant effect (P> 0,05) on ration consumption, body weight, body weight gain, and ration conversion. Further more of Duncan’s analysis on first egg lay in Japanese quail of P2 were significantly faster (P <0.05) than P0, whereas P3 and P1 were not significantly different (P> 0.05) than P0. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that Azolla powder up to level 15% in the ration can be used without negative effect on body weight gain and first egg lay in Japanese quail. The use of Azolla powder up to level 10% can expidite the age of first egg lay.
