Abstract

Ironwood (Bulian) (Eusideroxylon zwagery Teijsm & Binn) belongs to family of Lauraceous. It is one of the most important construction woods in Indonesia because it is not vulnerable to termites and other ubiquitous tropical wood-destroying insects and fungi. Due to overexploitation, its population in decreasing drastically especially after economic and political crisis in Indonesia. The variability of E zwagery has been reported by many scientists since the middle of 19th century. Most of them only reported the diversity, which was recognised by local people. Molecular genetic analysis show that the diversity has genetic basis,, An investigation and mapping on mother trees of E zwagery varieties had been conducted in Senami, Jambi Province of Indonesia in May 2006. The objectives of this study are to get information on number of areas which can be classified as mother trees. to determine the distribution of mother trees in forest and geographical position of each mother trees. Knowledge on number and distribution of mother trees is very important for future development and sustainable management of E zwagery. Senami forest experienced massive exploitation therefore in this area could only found 29 trees which can be determined as mother trees. E zwagery varietis grew in small cluster associatively with a lot of tree species, Mother trees of zwagery variety grew with 23 tree species. grandis grew with 8 species, exilis grew with 9 tree species and ovoidus grew with 20 tree species.
