Abstract
In this study, one of the most well-known American stand-up comedians, Kevin Hart, was chosen to demonstrate the linguistic features of humor genre utterances in stand-up comedy. The research aims to identify the forms of discourse markers used in Kevin Hart’s stand-up comedy materials and explain the function of the discourse markers found in Kevin Hart’s stand-up comedy materials. To evaluate the factual information gathered during data collection and provide logical and consistent replies to the study questions, the researcher employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The data was taken from 2 videos performance of Kevin Hart with the title Seriously Funny (2010) and Laugh at my Pain (2011). The researcher found there are four functions namely ideational structure, information state, participation framework, and action structure, unfortunately, none of the eleven markers were found as exchange structures. In conclusion, he created a whole topic sequence in his stand-up material by using ideational structure creators. Also, to organize the general information and specific information in his own life story, which is intended to be understood by his audience, he employed information state markers. This allowed him to make the story relatable to the audience's personal lives as well. Also, Hart's stand-up material included his past and present family issues, which involved a number of scenes. Hart then used action structure to link those scenes to create a coherent narrative.
