Abstract
ABSTRACT Albert Roy Sanly 2017.Factors Affecting Students’ Speaking Performance and Students’ Speaking Problem at SMK N 3 Jambi Thesis, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Jambi University. First supervisor: Lilik Ulfiati, S.Pd., M.Pd and second supervisor: Susanah, S.Pd., M.Sc. Key words: Speaking problems, factors affecting speaking performance This research studies about the students’ of Vocational High School problems in speaking English and about Factors affecting their speaking performance.. The purpose of this study is to find out problems faced by students of SM N 3 Jambi in speaking English and to know the factors affecting their speaking English performance. There were 51 participants from this study program. The data of this research were collected by using questionnaire. The design of this research is quantitative method with survey research design. The items for the questionnaire were adapted from previous researches by Nguyen (2015). The questionnaire consist of 6 close- ended questionnaire with total of 29 items. Those questionnaire asked about the students’ perception about English, Factors affecting their speaking English performance and Speaking problems faced by them. The result of the reseach found that there are several problems faced by the students such as; they are affraid of making mistakes, they fearful of critism, they cannot think of anything to say, they have no motivation to speak English, they speak very little and they tend to speak bahasa Indonesia, and some factors affecting their speaking performance such as; preparation time, topical knowledge, anxiety, confidence, pressured to perform well, motivation to speak English and time to perform.. The finding of the present research suggests interventions from the reachers to overcome to the problems faced by students and to help the students improve the performance conditions.
