Abstract

The inevitable connection of language and culture put the Indonesian students to the needs of integration of culture while learning a language. As a consequence, the learning materials or English materials for specific should provide the cultural awareness in term of intercultural understanding. This research investigates cultural loads in English textbooks for year XII students entitled Let’s Learn English published by Bumi Askara. To reveal what cultures are represented in the textbook, the cultural contents are categorized into the source culture, Target Culture, International Target Culture and Culture Free. The investigation finds that: 28 % of the input texts represent Source Cultures. Then, there are 34 % of the texts represent Target Cultures and there are 33% represent International Target Culture. The last, Culture Free is represented 5%. From the findings, it can be seen clearly that the overall occurrence of cultural loads provide the balance presentation among the Source Culture, Target Culture, and International Target Culture. Relatively, Target Culture is the most prominent presented in the textbook, followed by International Target Culture, Source Culture, and Culture Free. Therefore, in line with the theories, the English textbook for year XII students entitled Let’s Learn English supports the learners in developing their intercultural understanding.
