Abstract
Effluent is produced in a large amount in a palm oil mill. Every one ton of fresh fruit bunch used for production of crude palm oil produces 0,6 to 0,7 ton effluent. The large amount of effluent should be managed properly to prevent environmental pollution. Land cultivation and management should be done in such a way to manage the effluent by using it as an ameliorant to improve soil chemical properties. This research was conducted to evaluate the effect of palm oil mill effluent (POME) application on the chemical properties of acid soil. The experiment was carried out at a green house at the Experimental Farm University of Jambi. Plastic pots were filled with 5 kg of air dried soil (Ultisol), and treatments were mixed with the soil. Treatments of 50,000 L ha-1, 100,000 L ha-1, 150,000 L ha-1 and 200,000 L ha-1 of POME were arranged in a completely randomized design with three replications. The results of study showed that the improvements of some soil chemical properties occurred with the application of POME. The application of 200,000 L ha-1 of POME gave the highest increase in soil pH, organic carbon, total N, P-Bray 1, exchangeable K, Ca and Mg, and cation exchange capacity. In addition, a large decrease of exchangeable Al was found with the application of 200,000 L ha-1 POME.
