Abstract

Ironwood (BUlian) (Eusideroxylon zwageri Teijsm & Binn) belongs to family of Lauraceae. It is one of the most important construction woods in Indonesia because it is not vulnerable to termites and other ubiquitous tropical wood-destroying insect and fungi. Due to overexploitation, its popuplation is decreasing drastically especially after economical and political crisis in Indonesia. The variability of E. zwgeri has been reported by many scientists since the middle of 19th century. Most of them only reported the diversity which was recognised by local people. Molecular genetic analysis show that the diversity has genetic basis. An investigation and mapping on mother trees of E. zwageri varieties ha been conducted in Senami Jambi Indonesia in May 2006. The objectives of the study are to get information on number of trees which can be classified as mother trees to determine the distribution of mother tree in the forest and geographical position of each mother tree. Knowlegde of number and distribution of mother tree is very important for future development and sustainable management of E. zwageri. Senami forest experienced massive exploitation therefore in this area could only be found 29 trees which can be determined as mother trees. E. zwageri varieties grew in small clusters associatevely with a lot of tree species. Mother tree of zwageri variety grew with 23 tree spesies: grandis grew with 8 species: exilis grew with 9 species and ovoidus grew with 20 tree species.
