Abstract
The purpose of this study was to build the water management in peatlands area for oil palm development and fire prevention. The study was conducted from July 2016 to December 2017, using survey and monitoring methods. The research is divided into for stages: 1). data collection of soil characteristics, climate, hydrology and water system; 2). observation of daily water fluctuations in secondary channels, in the land, and observation of rainfall for one year on scrub land and oil palm; 3). assessment of open drainage system; and 4). assessment of operational models of water level control in the field. The results showed that 1). there are changes in some physical properties of secondary forest land into palm oil plantation land, 2). daily water fluctuations in the field and in the secondary channel are affected by physical properties, land use type rainfall, evapotranspiration, and distance from the channel; 3). The channel dimension is bigger than it should be so even though the canal blocking has been built, the water level is still decrease when no rain, 4). An ellipse model is able to predict water level in the field, with determination coefficient value 91% - 96% and standard error of 0.043 m - 0,096 m, 5). land fires are expected to occur in the field on the depths of > 50 cm below ground level therefore the water level in the secondary canal should be maintained should not be > 60 cm below ground level, by controlling the drainage channel with three options. Drainage is under control from October to December, water retention from January to May, and a combination of detention and filling from June to September.
