Abstract
ABSTRACT Ananda, Riski Defita Dwi. 2018. The Students’ Strategies in Learning English Vocabulary at SMP N Satu Atap Pematang Jering Kabupaten Muaro Jambi. Thesis. English Study Program. Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Jambi University. Academic Year 2017/2018. The first advisor is Robi Soma, S.Pd., M.Pd and the second advisor is Dra. Radiatan Mardiah, M.Hum. Key words: Students’ Strategies, Vocabulary, Descriptive Research. The aim of this study is to find out the strategies used in learning English vocabulary by students of SMP N Satu Atap Pematang Jering Kabupaten Muaro Jambi. This is a descriptive research. The study used questionnaire with 35 statements and interview with ninth questions. The participants of this study were VII, VIII and IX students of SMP N Satu Atap Pematang Jering. There are eight Strategies used by the students. They are beliefs about vocabulary learning, metacognitive regulation, guessing strategies, dictionary strategies, note-taking strategies, memory strategies, activation strategies, and source. The finding of this study showed that the most dominant strategies that student used is dictionary strategies. The result of this study could be used as one of references for teachers to help students overcome their problems in learning vocabulary.
