Abstract

Rubber is a superior agriculture commodity in Jambi Province that spreading all over the land, such in Batang Pelepat Watershed, and is now dominated land agriculture at Batang Pelepat Watershed. However, Batang Pelepat Watershed is also becoming a target for oil palm development that some part of rubber farming land has been converted into oil palm farming land. Whereas, rubber is one of the agriculture commodities that classified as a tree and has some advantages in ecology functions, such advantage in hydrology. This paper discussed about the potentiality of rubber farming system at Batang Pelepat Watershed to be developed as a conservation agriculture model that can save the watershed hydrology condition. The discussion of this paper included the impact of rubber farming system at Batang Pelepat Watershed on soil permeability, soil infiltration capacity, and run off. The data needed for this paper included the type of the land used and local rubber farming agrotechnology at Batang Pelepat Watershed. Furthermore, their impacts on soil permeability, soil infiltration capacity, and the run off were analyzed with analysis of varians and Duncan New Multiple Range Test (DNMRT) on α =0.05. The result showed that rubber farming with multiple cropping systems (mixed of rubber-kayu sungkai-manau) that known as sesap karet (rubber sesap) is the most potential conservation agriculture to be developed, based on the tree crop, to maintain the watershed hydrology condition. It is indicated by the rate of soil permeability and infiltration capacity under rubber sesap are higher than under the other rubber farming and oil palm farming and the rate of run off under rubber sesap is lower than under the other rubber farming and oil palm farming. The soil permeability showed that result 9.90 cmhr-1, the infiltration capacity, showed that result 5.84 cmhr-1, and run off is only 3.53 mm (14.31% of rainfall). The ability of rubber sesap in absorbing water into soil is also supported by soil properties that better than under the other rubber farming and oil palm farming.
