Abstract

ABSTRACT Harsani, Lisa (2018) Exploring Students Reading Practices in Digital Era: The case of English Education Department of Jambi University. Thesis. English Study Program. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Jambi University in Academic Year 2017/2018. First adviser Indri Anastasia S.S., M.A and the second advisor is Dra. Radiatan Mardiah. M.Hum Key words: Reading practices, Case study, Students reading practices The purpose of this study is to explore students reading practices in digital era. This study using a qualitative design with case study approaches. Six participants were selected in this research. The data obtained from interviews were analyzed. There were four major points of students reading practices in digital era ; 1) students purpose; academic and non academic. 2) Students reading format; digital reading online and offline, printed text. 3) Student’s engagement. 4) Student’s reading strategies; skimming and scanning depends on student’s purpose. In conclusion, in digital era the participant read both printed and digitally. The reading practices of participant it depend on their need and purpose. The implication of this research is to increase students’ awareness in using technology as medium for reading, whether academic or non-academic reading.
