Abstract
This study investigates apology strategies uttered by male and female students of English Education Study Program at Jambi University. It attempts to see the differences of apology strategies used by male and female students of English Education Study Program. The purpose of this research is to find out the apology strategies, the forms, and the function of apology strategies used by male and female respondents. Descriptive qualitative is the method of this study. Three male and three female students were chosen as the participants based on their speaking score. The data were collected from open role-play situation given to the participants. The situation consists of six situations. The result demonstrated that male students are the most frequent in using apology strategies rather than female students. There are 4 strategies dominated by male students, those are expression of regret, self-deficiency, gratitude and exclamation, whereas female students only dominate the strategy of expression of regret. Then, the form of apology strategies between male and female students is different. It is seen from the usage of apology strategies used by male and female students. Then, this research found that male students really want to maintain and restore the relationship between apologizer and offended person rather than female students. It can be seen from the total apology strategies and kind of apology strategies used by male students.
