Abstract

The study aimed to evaluate the effect of applying palm kernel shell biochar and chicken manure in improving Ultisol density and soybean yield. The research was conducted in Tangkit Village, Sungai Gelam Subdistrict, Muaro Jambi Regency, Jambi Province. Analysis of soil samples and biochar was carried out at the Soil Physics Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Jambi University. This research was conducted for ± 5 months, starting from February 2020 to June 2020. This study used a Randomized Group Design (RAK) with 7 treatments and 4 replications so that there were 28 experimental plots (Appendix 1). The size of the experimental plot was 3 m x 2 m with a spacing of 30 cm x 25 cm (Appendix 2) so that the number of plants in one plot was 80 plants. The results showed that the application of palm kernel shell biochar 5 tons/ha + chicken manure 5 tons/ha was better in optimizing soil density. Palm kernel shell biochar and chicken manure in combination with different doses can improve soil density through a decrease in BV, as well as penetration resistance (KP) and increase TRP. The application of oil palm shell biochar and chicken manure combined with different doses can increase plant height and soybean yield. The application of 10 tons/ha palm kernel shell biochar + 5 tons/ha chicken manure has the highest increase in soybean yield by 28.66%.
