Abstract

ABSTRACT The purpose of this research were to investigate the challenges faced by English teachers in teaching speaking in speaking class in junior high school and to investigate the strategies used by English teachers to overcome those challenges. The research was conducted in one junior high schools in Batanghari. This research used a qualitative design with a case study approach while the data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews and observation. Purposive sampling was used to determine the research samples, two English teachers mentor speaking class. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. The result of this data revealed that 1) there were two major themes in challenges in teaching speaking including internal challenges and external challenges, 2) English teachers used strategies to overcome those challenges including motivational strategies, appropriation strategies, and autonomy strategies.
