Abstract

Capah, Catherine Rohmoia. 2023. Debaters’ Challenges and Strategies in Debate Competition at One Public University of Jambi. Thesis. English Education Study Program. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Universitas Jambi in Academic year 2022/2023. The first supervisor is Dr. Mukhlash Abrar, S.S., M.Hum. The second supervisor is Dr. Reli Handayani, S.S., M.Pd. This research aimed to explore debaters’ challenges during debate competition and the strategies they used to overcome those challenges. The research was conducted at the English department in one public university of Jambi. This research employed a qualitative method with a case study approach. The participants in this research were six debaters who experienced NUDC (National University Debating Championship). The researcher used purposive sampling to select the appropriate participants based on the criteria. In obtaining data, the researcher interviewed the participants. In analyzing the data, the researcher used thematic analysis. The results of this research indicated that debaters experienced some challenges when debating in the debate competition which were divided into two sessions, namely building case session which consist of lack of knowledge. Another session is debate session which consist of speaking anxiety, lack of vocabulary, pausing speech, managing emotion, speech duration and problem with notes. To overcome those challenges, the participants used some strategies that also devided into two parts, first in building case session which consist of motion understanding, discussing with teammates and making well-organized notes. Moreover, in the debate session, the participants used making well-organized argument, being calm, elaboration, managing time and controlling nonverbal communication as their strategies.
