Abstract

This study aimed to describe the comparison of grammatical collocations “same as” and “same with” in terms of the frequency as well as to know what commonly possible context which the phrase “same with” can be used instead of “same as”. This study used corpus linguistics as methodology which lies in-between qualitative and quantitative methods. The subject of the research was written texts and transcripted of unscripted speech from all genres that the corpus of contemporary American English (COCA) provided with. This study employed purposive sampling technique to select the data based on certain criteria of this study purpose. The findings indicated that given its relatively higher occurrence the phrase “same as” is much more frequent than the phrase “same with”. Moreover, there are at least four contexts or functions which the phrase “same with” could possibly be used as an appropriate phrase instead of “same as”. they are :(1) As in respect to (2) Distinctive similarity (3) As reference over something, and (4) Indicating a state of togetherness, while the phrase “same as” was commonly used in at least two contexts or functions. They are (1) To indicate similar states, conditions, situations of/or things, (2) To indicate similar acts. Keywords :Corpus Linguistics, Grammatical Collocations, Language Learning
