Abstract
ABSTRACT Adilah, Nur. 2023. Improving Students’ Speaking Skills and Engagement by Using Project-Based Learning (PBL). Thesis. Master Program of English Education. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Universitas Jambi in Academic Year 2022/2023. The first supervisor is Drs. Syahrial, M.Ed, Ph.D. The second supervisor is Dr. Yanto, S.Pd., M.Ed. Some students encountered several problems in learning speaking skills. The problems are a lack of vocabulary, a lack of pronunciation, a lack of time to practice, and a lack of confidence to speak English. Hence, the researcher needs to solve the problems by conducting classroom action research, which included four steps in a research process of continuing cycles of research and action. This research is aimed at improving learning activities, teacher’s capability, the speaking skills and engagement of twenty-five students in the eight-class at Boarding School of Tahfizhil Qur’an Lebay Yasin Titian Teras through project-based learning (PBL). The data collection techniques used were speaking tests, observation, and interviews. The result of the research showed that there was an improvement in students’ speaking skills after implementing PBL in speaking classes. It can be seen by the average score of students’ speaking skills from each cycle. Cycle I was 70.92, improved to cycle II, 72.96, and improved to the last cycle, 76.6. However, implementing PBL could not always increase students’ engagement at each meeting in the classroom based on three indicators: cognitive, affective, and behavioral engagement. Their engagement varied and changed. There was an increase and a decrease due to the students’ condition, different levels of difficulty for each learning material, and different class situations in each meeting. Future research might apply PBL to other learning materials and other skills in English language learning.
