Abstract

This research is based on the fact that there is an increasing use of electronic books at Jambi universities as learning resources. However, no research discusses student perceptions of the use of electronic books. Thus, this study aims to explore the perceptions of English students toward the use of English electronic books at Jambi University. The method used in this research is a quantitative descriptive method with a survey approach. This research was conducted at the English education department with sample selection using a purposive sampling method, to obtain research samples of English students batch 2019 and 2020. To obtain data, the researcher used a questionnaire instrument with a total of 17 statement items which were then distributed to 181 respondents in the form of a Google link Form via WhatsApp group. From the data obtained, the researcher tabulated the data using Microsoft Excel and analyzed using the SPSS 25 program. The results of this study were grouped into three indicators: the cognitive component, the affective component, and the conative component. Based on the cognitive component or knowledge and experience of the respondents, it was shown that 86,809 % of their answers had a positive perception. Because, in terms of experience, the respondents have used English electronic books since the first semester. Then the emotional or affective component shows that the average respondent's answer is 87,904 %, which means that it is also classified as a positive perception. Some of the reasons that make the majority of respondents prefer to use English electronic books are that they are flexible to take anywhere, save costs because they can be accessed for free, and are environmentally friendly. And the conative component shows that the average respondent's answer is 88,098% which is classified as a positive perception. One of the proofs is that respondents use electronic books more often than printed books while on campus. Thus, it can be concluded that English students have a positive perception of the use of English electronic books at the University of Jambi. So, its use must be even more effective, and support from lecturers is needed.
