Abstract

Acanthus ilicifolius or jeruju is a type of mangrove plant that is commonly found in Jambi Province. Jeruju is often used as a medicine to accelerate wound healing due to bacterial infections and also as an indicator plant for water quality. The Acanthus ilicifolius plant has been widely studied regarding the compounds contained in it. Based on previous research, it was reported that Acanthus ilicifolius was proven to contain alkaloids, tannins, saponins, flavonoids, steroids and coumarins. The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of antibacterial activity against Streptococcus agalactiae from Acanthus ilicifolius leaf extract and to determine the effective concentration in inhibiting the growth of Streptococcus agalactiae. In this study, the leaves of Acanthus ilicifolius were extracted using 95% ethanol by maceration process. The next process was evaporation to separate the extract from the solvent and a thick extract of Acanthus ilicifolius leaves was obtained. The viscous extract that has been obtained is then subjected to a qualitative phytochemical test to determine the secondary metabolite compounds contained in the extract. Antibacterial effectiveness test was carried out by paper disc diffusion method using Muller Hinton Agar (MHA) media. The results of the phytochemical test of Acanthus ilicifolius leaves contain alkaloids, flavaoids, terpenoids, and tannins. In testing the antibacterial effectiveness of Acanthus ilicifolius leaf extract showed antibacterial effectiveness at concentrations of 15%, 20% and 25% with an average diameter of the inhibition zone of 2.435 mm, 3.242 mm and 4.647 mm against Streptococcus agalactiae bacteria. Data analysis used a completely randomized design (CRD) with one way ANOVA and continued with the Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) using SPSS. Based on the research that has been done, it can be concluded that Acanthus ilicifolius leaf extract shows antibacterial effectiveness at a concentration of 15% with an average diameter of 2.435 mm belonging to the weak category (<5 mm).
