Abstract

Online learning has emerged as a prominent method of education, utilizing the Internet, media platforms, and computer networks to deliver educational materials remotely. This study aims to investigate the motivation of English students at UIN Sultan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi towards online learning. Adopting a qualitative case study approach, data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with nine English department students at UIN STS Jambi. The findings of this study showed most of the students were not motivated and entusiastic to study through online learning. The students shed light on various factors influencing students' motivation and learning experience, including poor internet connectivity, limited interaction with instructors and peers, difficulty understanding lectures, boredom and disinterest. Nonetheless, it is vital to acknowledge that students can also be motivated by academic goals, external support, aspirations for higher education and international exposure, language proficiency objectives, and parental involvement. By effectively addressing the challenges and leveraging these motivators, educators and policymakers can establish a more engaging and effective online learning environment, thereby enhancing the overall learning experience for students.
