Abstract

This research investigated the challenges and strategies faced by English teachers in teaching English in an Islamic boarding school. Semi-structured interview and classroom observation were employed in this study. The participants of the study were two English teachers in an Islamic boarding school of al-Kinanah Jambi. The results showed that there were 3 challenges faced by the English teachers in teaching speaking at Islamic boarding school of al-Kinanah Jambi, they are: the students’ competence in speaking, lack of vocabularies and students’ lack of motivation. To cope with these challenges, there were 5 strategies. Those are: using learning media, applying various teaching strategies in the classroom, giving extra lessons, giving motivation and the last is creating the English language environment. Finally, through this research, it is expected the results from this finding can help English teachers to discover the teaching strategies suitable for the challenges they have.
