Abstract
Nurisnaeni, Dian. 2023. Rhetorical Appeals Found in Rishi Sunak (UK Prime Minister) Speeches Thesis, English Department. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Jambi University in Academic Year 2022/2023. First supervisor: Dr. Dra. Rachmawati, M. Pd. and second supervisor: Melati, S. Pd., M.CC. This study is aimed to identify the rhetorical appeals and persuasive strategies produced by Rishi Sunak as the United Kingdom Prime Minister in his speech during the election season and in conference. This study used descriptive qualitative method and the data were obtained by taking transcriptions of Rishi Sunak speeches retrieved from GOV.UK. The researcher analyzes the data by using Aristotle’s theory where he divides the qualities into three types namely Ethos, Pathos and Logos. The result showed that Rishi Sunak is frequently utilizes those three qualities of rhetorical to persuade listeners or audiences as well as to support what is becoming the Sunak’s purpose. Based on the finding data, Sunak dominantly uses Ethos by showing his knowledge, demonstrating good moral and behavior and showing his good intention toward the country and the audience. The second dominant appeal produced by Sunak is Pathos that is stirring audience’s emotion to gain audience’s sympathy and trust. The last strategy is Logos, where he allows the audience to construct their own conclusion after been provided with several premises and to make prediction of the current situation by giving analogous example. In conclusion, Sunak employs all three types of rhetorical appeals in his speech. Keywords: Rhetorical appeals, speech, Prime Minister.
