Abstract

This research was intended to explore the reasons and motivation of English mismatch teachers to teach English and the challenges they encounter in teaching English. The site of this research was an Islamic Junior High School in Sarolangun. There were two participants involved in this study. The researcher used case study qualitative research. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews. The researcher took benefit of the participant’s demographic information. The findings of this research are contained six major themes that got from the interviews. The themes are: 1) English Mismatch Teacher, 2) Challenges of English Mismatch Teacher, 3) Teacher’s Professionalism, 4) Teacher’s Linearity, 5) The Impact of English Mismatch Teacher on student’s performances, and 6) Needs of English Mismatch Teacher. The finding of this study revealed that there were some reasons, motivations, and challenges of English mismatch teachers teaching English such as finding qualified English teachers to teach in that school was hard, having a decree of the foundation to keep being an English teacher, having a professional certification that meant the certified teachers would not stop their profession but they should improve their English and teaching quality. Furthermore, other finding related to the challenges that English mismatch teachers encounter in their teaching process, the challenges were teachers’ content knowledge and teacher’s pedagogic skill.
