Abstract

This qualitative research study explores the experiences and perspectives of seafarer and non-active seafarer teachers in teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP) at a maritime vocational high school. Through in-depth interviews, the study investigates how teachers' backgrounds influence their instructional strategies and preparations for seafarers' careers. The findings highlight the importance of collaboration, material adaptation, and goal setting in preparing for ESP instruction at maritime vocational schools. Aligning the content with students' majors enhances relevance and progression. Challenges in evaluating maritime ESP proficiency include the need for authentic assessments. Providing constructive feedback and support faces challenges such as time constraints and diverse student needs. Proposed strategies include interactive activities, technology integration, and diverse assessments. These findings anticipate enhancing student engagement and proficiency through technology, authentic materials, and varied assessments in maritime ESP instruction. Additionally, the study emphasizes the need to refine evaluation methods to accurately assess students' language proficiency in maritime contexts. To address this, the research proposes the Maritime Experiential-Situated-Sociocultural Learning (MESSL) Model, which integrates experiential, situated, and sociocultural learning theories. The MESSL Model aims to enhance the effectiveness and relevance of ESP education by incorporating seafarers' experiences, emphasizing student-centered approaches, and refining evaluation methods within authentic maritime contexts. Practical recommendations include implementing teacher training programs, involving industry experts in curriculum design, and utilizing technology-enhanced resources. This study contributes to advancing ESP instruction in maritime vocational schools, equipping seafarers with the necessary language skills for successful careers in the maritime industry.
