Abstract
Keywords: Autonomous Learning, Independent and Self Learning This research is a phenomenology study which focused on students’ experiences on autonomous learning to develop their ability in English. This research aimed to explore the autonomous learning to develop students’ English ability. This research used qualitative research method with phenomenology approach. The researcher used semi-structure interview in order to collect data and information. There were 3 students and 1 instructor of teaching as the participants of the research. They are students who have studied in autonomous learning especially in Kumon for more than a year, their ages around 13 to 16 and they are junior high school students. After collected the data from interview by using audio recording, the researcher made transcripts of the participants interviews as the main data in the researcher. The findings of this research revealed into main point about the autonomous learning method to develop students’ English ability at Kumon Institution of Education and the factors affect them in autonomous learning. The data stated that students’ way to develop their ability in autonomous learning by some method, there are technique by doing homework and study every day in order to keep or increase their dexterity, they starting to learn at early age, they capable formulating their own learning objectives from the media, having support from the people around them and they can identify what is going on. The researcher found that what students do cannot be said to be fully autonomous learning. One of Kumon goals is to help students in promoting the students to be autonomous and they can become a true independent learner after finished the study with their own ways. Meanwhile, there are factors that affecting students in autonomous learning and it came from external and internal factors such as motivation and their big dreams for the future academic study or careers
