Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the significant correlation between students’ self-confidence and their speaking performance during online learning for the whole semester for the first time. This study conducted a quantitative correlational research design and used closed-ended questionnaire to collect the data. The questionnaire in the form of google forms was distributed via WhatsApp to the respondents. The sample of this study were students in the class of 2020 at one university in Jambi that take “Speaking for general Purposes” class. The data was analyzed with SPSS version 25 and the correlation between the two variables was analyzed with Spearman correlation. The result of the study revealed that there is a strong correlation between the two variables because the coefficient correlation of 0.364, which is within the range of 0.30 and 0.49, was seen. Because the -p value (0.000) is smaller than the level of significance (0.50), it shows that there is a significant correlation between students' self-confidence and their speaking performance during online learning. It shows that there is a directionally correlation between the two variables, with speaking performance increasing as students' self- confidence increases and decreasing when students' self-confidence decreases. The results of the evaluation of this study on the self-assessment carried out by students also showed that low self-confidence made their speaking performance not at a good level either. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui hubungan yang signifikan antara kepercayaan diri siswa dan kinerja berbicara mereka selama pembelajaran online untuk seluruh semester untuk pertama kalinya. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain penelitian korelasional kuantitatif dan menggunakan kuesioner tertutup untuk mengumpulkan data. Kuesioner berupa google form disebar melalui WhatsApp kepada responden. Sampel penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa angkatan 2020 di salah satu universitas di Jambi yang mengambil mata kuliah “Speaking for general Purposes”. Data dianalisis dengan SPSS versi 25 dan korelasi antara kedua variabel dianalisis dengan korelasi Spearman. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat korelasi yang kuat antara kedua variabel karena terlihat koefisien korelasi sebesar 0,364 yang berada dalam kisaran 0,30 dan 0,49. Karena nilai -p (0,000) lebih kecil dari taraf signifikansi (0,50), hal ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat hubungan yang signifikan antara kepercayaan diri siswa dengan kemampuan berbicara mereka selama pembelajaran daring. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat hubungan yang searah antara kedua variabel tersebut, dengan performa berbicara meningkat seiring dengan meningkatnya kepercayaan diri siswa dan menurun ketika kepercayaan diri siswa menurun. Hasil evaluasi penelitian ini terhadap penilaian diri yang dilakukan oleh siswa juga menunjukkan bahwa kepercayaan diri yang rendah membuat kemampuan berbicara mereka juga tidak baik.
