Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of grammatical errors that are made by EFL learners during thesis proposal seminars at Jambi University in their speaking and to find out the sources of errors produced by EFL learners during thesis proposal seminars at Jambi University in their speaking. This study uses a qualitative descriptive design. The subjects of this research were eight semester students who conducted a proposal seminar at Jambi University. Collecting data in this study using observation techniques and recording techniques. The data obtained were analyzed using a qualitative descriptive analysis technique. In this study, the researchers found 445 utterances which indicated errors made by students when conducting thesis proposal seminar from seven students. The errors were classified using the surface strategy taxonomy proposed by Dulay, Burt and Krashen (1982). The kinds of errors are omissions, additions, misinformation, and misordering. The result of the analysis found that the types of errors made by eight semester students in conducting thesis proposal seminar were 201 omission errors, 143 addition errors, 97 misinformation errors, and 4 misordering which were made by eight semester students while conducting proposal seminars. The results of the analysis show that the sources of errors were classified according to theory of Richard (1974). They are interlanguage, over-generalization, ignorance rule restriction, incomplete application rule, and hypothesized false concepts. The result of the analysis shows that the sources of errors that were made by eight semester students are 4 interlanguage errors, 74 Over-generalization errors, 132 Ignorance rule restriction, 201 Incomplete application rule, and 29 False concept hypothesized. It is concluded that the most common error made by the students in thesis proposal seminar is omission and the source is incomplete application rule.
