Abstract

ABSTRACT Octarinaldi, Bima. 2018. Code Switching Spoken by English teachers at MAN 1 Muara Bulian. English Study Program, Language and Art Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Jambi University. Supervisor: Dr, Dra, Rachmawati, M.Pd and Co-supervisor: Bunga Ayu Wulandari, S.Pd., MEIL., Ph.D. Key words: code-switching, English teachers, Teacher’s first language (L1) This study is aimed at investigating the code switching spoken by English teachers at MAN Muara Bulian. The research questions in this study are: (1) what are the types of code-switching spoken by two English teachers at MAN Muara Bulian? (2) what are the purposes of MAN Muara Bulian English teachers in uttering code-switching strategy during their English and teaching learning process? This study used qualitative approach since the data being analyzed were in the form of teachers’ utterances when explaining English lessons in the classrooms. The reseacher found out that three types of code switching used by the two Emglish teachers, they are intra-sentential, inter-sentential and extra-sentential or tag switching. The reseacher found out the reasons in using code-switching by English teachers at MAN Muara Bulian based on the results of the interview with them. First, there are some terms which are easier to be explained in Indonesian than English itself. The second is to make the discussion in the EFL classroom, become enjoyable, run smoothly and the lesson materials understandable. Moreover, the teachers’ switching give positive effects. The researcher concluded that code-switching plays a good role in the classroom.
