Abstract

Textbook are often seen as being the core of a particular program . Meanwhile, there is no likely a perfect textbook to cater the diversity of the learners in a class. As the current curriculum will still use till 2020, When English Rings a Bell also probably still use in line with this curriculum. Thus, it is important actions to evaluate the textbook to help teachers cater the diversity of the learners. Through the evaluation, this research is designed to find the weakness and strength of an English textbook used by seventh grader students in a public junior high school, entitled When English Ring a Bell. Participants of this research are three teachers who have used the textbook. Checklist evaluation used as the instrument to gain teachers assessment about the textbook. thus, the quantitative method is used. There are forty five statement provided to help teachers give their evaluation toward the When English Rings a Bell textbook. The checklist evaluation is adopted from D.R. Litz (2005), Sheldon (1988), and Mukundan et al,.(2011) evaluation checklist. The findings of the checklist evaluation sheet showed teachers’ positive evaluation for When Englsih Rings a Bell textbook. The teachers agree it has attractive layout and design for the students and it has effective organization between text and pictures. The textbook also provide clear instructions of activities for the learning and it provide enough activities to help students explore their understanding and ability about the topics. The textbook help students to focus on skills they need to have by providing the supporting materials. But, the textbook does not provide any authentic materials to support the learning skills. But, this book use language with a right level for the students, it is not hard for them to understand it. It also covers many different subject and content to support effective EFL class. Based on the findings, the strength of this textbook is the layout and design aspect. It is captivating students’ interest in a colorful way and illustrated with comic-like characters design. Meanwhile, the weakness of the book is it is not provided balance activities toward 4 language skills. The activity of the book mostly is enhancing learners’ speaking skill. It does not provide authentic materials to enhance students’ listening, writing, and reading skill.
