Abstract
This study aims to explore experiences of professional translators in Jambi Province. The focus was to reveal the translators’ competence profiles, types of works and their professional development journey, as well as challenges and opportunities in their professional life. Information gathered from the participantsis expected to give insight and feedbacks for improvement of translation teaching at universities, in particular at a study program which offers translation not as a core but elective subject. This study was carried out as a descriptive qualitative study. The main data was information related to the research question themes, which was collected through in-depth interviews with participants who consist of professional translators in Jambi Province. Secondary data was collected by analyzing documents related to translation teaching used by English Education study program. The analysis was carried out by comparing data from participants and from documents to identify gaps between what is being taught to students and the real translation competences required to enter translation job market. Researcher found that translation profession is wide open for those who posses competences in language and linguistics, cultures, translation theories and ethics, technology, and research skills. In this sense, translators need specialized trainings, not only language competences. Translators also need important soft skills to handle their tasks efficiently such as collaborative skill, teamwork, and self-discipline. Translation profession offers wide range of prospects such as financial rewards, networking, travelling opportunities, and career development. There are also challenges for translator in dealing with this profession from intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Further analysis of the translators’ professional experiences also suggest that translation class at universities must include not only the teaching of translation theories and in-class translation practice but also an opportunity for experiential-based learning in which students can learn from real-life translation works, for example through internship.
