Abstract

ABSTRACT Candi Bukik Awang Maombiak is located in Dharmasraya regency, and it is currently in a severely damaged condition, so its architectural form is unknown. Excavations at this site have been conducted from 1998 to 2017. From the excavation results, bricks with reliefs were found, but these reliefs were already detached from the structure of the temple when they were discovered. These relief bricks were then stored at the Conservation Center for Culture (BPK) Region III of West Sumatra Province, and until now, no motif identification has been carried out on these reliefs. Therefore, this research is conducted to identify the motifs and placement of reliefs on the temple structure. To address this issue, archaeological research methods were applied to 10 brick fragments with reliefs from Candi Bukik Awang Maombiak, which are part of the collection at the BPK Region III of West Sumatra Province. The collected data from observations were then processed to determine attributes of motifs on the brick. The research findings revealed that the motifs on the relief bricks of Candi Bukik Awang Maombiak consist of three types of decorative patterns, namely geometric, floral, and fauna motifs. The geometric motifs include variations such as guilander, hiranyagarbha, agni, ratna, and guirlande. The floral motifs encompass variations of jasmine flowers, lotus flowers, and vines. Lastly, the fauna motifs involve variations of elephants represented by their trunks. Conceptually, these motifs are located on the body, legs and pelipit of the temple.
