Abstract

This study aims to investigate students’ ability in producing stress in English complex words with suffix. This research used quantitative research with descriptive design. The samples were selected using simple random sampling. 30% from the number of population in one class was selected by researcher. Therefore, the samples were 11 sixth semester students of English Education Study Program at Jambi University. This research focuses on the words with suffixes in complex word and divided into two categories function, as a Noun and Adjective. The instrument consists of English complex word with suffix in isolation category. The data was obtained through production test or spoken test. Oxford Learner’s Dictionary and native speaker were used to correct students’ answer. The result shows that the ability of the sixth semester students in producing stress in English complex words are in “Fair” category. It based on the Mean of students’ score 67,36. There are three students who belong “Good” category with score more than 75, six students got score between 64-74 that belong to “Fair” category and 2 students got score 55 and 58 that belong to “Weak category”. Most of mistakes that produced by students are in stress-attracting suffixes. Finally, it is strongly recommended; more attention in pronouncing word should be paid by students because the wrong pronunciation could influences the meaning of the word that want to be uttered by them. The hearer’s attention toward stress placement that produced by speaker would be functioned well if the correct pronunciation was already completed.
