Abstract
English language test has important role especially in academic purposes many collages in Indonesian are used TOEFL for academic requirements. Likewise in Jambi University also offers Jambi English Language Testing (JUELT) for thesis and graduation requirement. This study is aimed to identify the strategies that used by English education students in preparing the JUELT test. This study used a case study with qualitative method and the data were obtained by taking interview of the participant who fulfill the criteria: 1) English education students in batch 2019, 2). Had passed the test with minimum score above 450, 3) and agreed to be interviewed. The researcher the participants by looking at the score data that had been given by the UPT Bahasa. There were eight participants that fulfill the criteria. This research used semi-structured interview by using WhatsApps application since the data gathered by online interview. The researcher analyzes the data by using Oxford’s theory that divides into six strategies namely, memory strategy, cognitive strategy, compensation strategy, meta-cognitive strategy, affective strategy, and social strategy. The results of this research indicate there are 12 strategies used by English education students in preparing for the JUELT test such as associating and memorizing words, reviewing, note-taking, re-reading, guessing words, making synonym, setting lesson plan, making study schedule, creating self-evaluation, setting environment, encouraging self-appreciation, discussing with pair. By the result it found that the most strategy that participant used are memory strategy (associating and reviewing) and cognitive strategy (Note-taking). Those strategies help the participants to expand the knowledge especially in structure and written skill and listening skill. Key words: Test, JUELT, Learning strategy.
