Abstract
The quality of an idiom translation is determined by the application of proper strategies since the meaning of idiom cannot be firm by its individual words. This study is an analysis of Indonesian subtitles of English idiomatic expressions found in the 2022 Netflix series “Wednesday”. The purpose was to uncover how the meanings of idioms are transferred between two culturally distant languages such as English and Indonesian. This research was carried out by using descriptive qualitative method. The data consisted of the pairs of English idioms found in three episodes of first series of “Wednesday” and their Indonesian subtit les. The analysis of the data was framed in two main theories, i.e. Venuti’s concept of foreignization and domestication as translation approach and Baker’s translation strategies. The translation of these idiomatic expressions involve five strategi es, i.e. translating into idioms of similar meaning and form, translating into idioms of similar meaning but dissimilar form, translating by paraphrasing idioms, translating by omission of play idioms, and translat ing by omission of entire idiom . The use of the first strategy resulted in foreignization of idioms. Meanwhile, the use of the second, third, fourth, and fifth strategy resulted in domestication of idioms. This means that the translator brought the idioms closer to the target culture. Among the fifth strategies, paraphrasing idioms are the most frequently used strategy. This demonstrated t hat most idiomatic expressions are highly cultural-bound, which can cause difficulties for direct translation. The transl ator needs to paraphrase them in order to produce equivalent meanings.
