Abstract

Motivation is one of the important factors that affect academic success. In learning vocabulary, students with low motivation will find it hard to understand the material, so they are less interested in learning vocabulary in the English language, which can impact their academic achievement. One way to improve students' motivation in learning vocabulary is by using game-based learning as it will attract students' interest. One of the game-based learning that has a positive impact on motivation is Wordwall. Wordwall is a game-based learning platform where teachers create fun activities that can create a more enjoyable learning atmosphere to increase student motivation in learning vocabulary. This study aimed to find out the students’ intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in learning vocabulary by using Wordwall game that place at SMPN 5 Tanjung Jabung Timur and selected by five students in grade VII in the 2022/2023 academic year. The participants were chosen using a purposive sampling technique. This study used a qualitative approach with a qualitative descriptive. The researcher collected the data by interview to determine whether there was a dominant factor in intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. The result of this research show that the good students' motivation leads them to use Wordwall more frequently for learning vocabulary.
