Abstract
In the field of English language teaching, educators frequently employ various media, including audio and audio-visual aids. However, an ongoing debate exists regarding whether students perceive these two forms of media differently. This study aims to provide insights into students' experiences with the use of accompanying audio and audio-visual aids in their listening comprehension, explore their perceptions of these aids, and investigate their preferences for media in the context of listening comprehension. Qualitative research methods, primarily interviews, were employed to collect data from eight students in the English education program at a university in Jambi. Thematic analysis revealed that audio and audio-visual media significantly positively impact the learning process, aiding in the comprehension of complex concepts. The study also found that students generally utilize both forms of media, each with strong justifications. The conclusion of this study reveals that both audio and audio-visual media have a significantly positive impact on the learning process and enhance the comprehension of complex concepts in English language learning. Students perceive these media as valuable tools for improving their listening comprehension skills. They find the presence of visuals, sound, and the interactive learning environment these media create to be particularly beneficial. These findings have important implications for English language educators, suggesting the importance of integrating audio and audio-visual materials into their teaching methods.
