Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the type and the reason of use code-switching and code-mixing by international students in English Department. This study used a qualitative method with observation and interview. The research was conducted in the English Education Department at one of Higher Education Institution in Jambi. The participants were two international students who were take based on their willingness to participate in this research. The research results showed the use of code-switching and code-mixing between Indonesian and English and vice versa. The results also showed that they used three types of code-switching in the classroom: inter-sentential code-switching, intra-sentential code-switching, and tag switching. Furthermore, for code-mixing, the type used is insertion. And also, some reasons for using code�switching and code-mixing are related to expressing identity, expressing solidarity, clarifying meaning and habit to topics.
