Abstract

The phenomenon of Code Switching can be observed in thesis seminar proposal interactions between either students or lecturers, especially in the English department of Universitas Jambi. This research aimed to identify what types of code-switching both students and lecturers used during the event and their reasons for using it. The researcher utilized the qualitative method, with 5 students’ seminars and their transcripts serving as data sources. To collect the data, the researcher applied the observation technique and datasheets to make their structured and concise analysis process using the code-switching theory from Shana Poplack (1980). The findings showed that during students’ seminar proposals, there were three types of code-switching namely, Inter-sentential, Intra-sentential, and Tag-switching. The data from the utterance shows 52 inter-sentential, 127 intra-sentential, and 13 tag-switching. intra-sentential is the most common type appearing 127 times and tag-switching is the least common type 13 times. There were also found forms of utterance such as positive, negative, and interrogative utterances with different parts of speech such as verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, and conjunctions. Three reasons were found during the result of transcribing it; (1) To fulfill a need, (2) to express solidarity and (3) to exclude others
