Abstract

Butarbutar, Nellyna Melati. A1B219060. 2023. Analysis of English Teacher Strategies to Improve Students’ Speaking Ability at Junior High School in Jambi City. Thesis. English Education Study Program. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Universitas Jambi in Academic year 2022/2023. The first supervisor is Dr. Dra. Rosinta Norawati, M.A. The second supervisor is Dr. Rd. M. Ali, S.Pd, M.Pd. In this research, the researcher use descriptive qualitative research as a method that focuses on the analysis of English teacher strategies for improving students’ speaking ability at one of junior high school in Jambi City. The location of this research is at SMP 10 Jambi City. The participants in this research are 2 English teacher who teach in grades 8th and 9th . There are so many variations of strategy in teaching speaking skill that used at SMP N 10 Jambi City. The result of this study, the researcher identified four strategies of teaching speaking which are used by the English teacher. They were Discussion, Answer and question, Story telling, and Picture Described. In discussion the students can sharing ideas, in answer and question the students can be able to think creatively and work cooperatively, in picture describing the students can being able to describe something in English, and in story telling the students can train their imagination. The result discussion of this study, in Discussion Strategy the teacher used this strategy because they felt that it would assist students prepare speaking and feel less shy because they could share their opinions with the other students, in Answer and question strategy the teachers can assess the students' understanding of the material and support them in using the language, in Story telling strategy can also grab their attention because stories are conveyed through words, vocal intonation, gestures, facial expressions, and body language that create a lively and authentic environment, and the last in Picture describing the teacher said this strategy can help students develop their creativity and repeat the story in English.
