Abstract
ABSTRACT Susan Septiani, 2023. “The Implementation of Duolingo Application For Improving Students English Vocabulary at The Seventh Grade of SMP Negeri 08 Muaro Jambi”. Thesis. English Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education University of Jambi in Academic Year 2023/2024. The first supervisor: Prof. Hadiyanto, S.Pd., M.Ed., Ph.D and second supervisor:Eddy Haryanto. S.Pd., M.SC.ED., MPP., Ph.D. Keywords: Duolingo Application, English Vocabulary Vocabulary is the basic component that must be had by learners in learning English languages. There are four skills you can learn in English.Thas listening, speaking, reading, and writing. All English learners use these skills in their daily lives. Students need a good vocabulary to balance these four skills. When collecting and mastering vocabulary, teachers usually suggest to students the old method such as Memorizing vocabulary and reading a few books. This can make it difficult for students to develop motivation and study comfortably to expand their vocabulary. Because of this, students feel lazy and don't care to expand their vocabulary when learning English. To overcome this problem teacher can use technology such as learning application media. One of the application that is Duolingo which is an application that can be used in smartphone. The method used in delivering learning material is enjoyable and can create an atmosphere in the learning process more enjoyable and meaningful. This research aims to find out the differences in improving students vocabulary before and after using Duolingo application for learning English at the seventh grade of SMPN 08 Muaro Jambi. This research used a quantitative approach with pre-experimental design. The population that was taken from SMPN 8 Muaro Jambi is Class VII Students. The samples used in this research were 28 students in Class VII G.To obtain the data, the researcher used an instrument test, that is the pre-test and post-test. And then, to analysed the data, the researcher used the paired sample T-test formula to determine is there a significant difference in the students mastery on vocabulary before and after taught by using Duolingo application. Based on the results analysist conducted this research, the results of the research show that Sig. (2-tailed) appearance is 0.00,which is smaller than 0.05. Based on data analysis and results of hypothesis calculations, it is known that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted here are the results: There is a significant difference in the students mastery on vocabulary before and after taught by using Duolingo application.
