Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi diamnya siswa dalam interaksi kelas berbicara EFL. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode studi kasus untuk lebih memahami fenomena diamnya siswa. Penelitian ini mengambil mahasiswa semester pertama khususnya kelas mendengar dan berbicara untuk tujuan umum di salah satu universitas di Jambi sebagai sumber data yang mana mereka dipilih secara purposif setelah diamati. Dua instrumen digunakan untuk memperoleh data, (a) observasi, dan (b) wawancara semi terstruktur. Dalam melakukan observasi, peneliti menggunakan formulir observasi untuk mengidentifikasi partisipan yang sesuai dengan penelitian ini. Wawancara dilakukan dengan menggunakan perekam audio untuk memperoleh data mengenai faktor-faktor siswa diam. Temuan penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa peserta tetap diam selama interaksi kelas karena beberapa faktor. Mereka adalah (1) guru EFL, (2) Siswa itu sendiri dan teman sekelas, (3) Materi pelajaran, (4) Lingkungan kelas. Temuan ini sebagian besar menyoroti kemahiran berbahasa dan kepercayaan diri siswa sebagai penyebab dari faktor-faktor tersebut. Peneliti menyarankan untuk penelitian selanjutnya untuk mengeksplorasi lebih jauh di balik keheningan mereka dan menemukan solusi untuk mengatasi fenomena keheningan dalam interaksi kelas. This research was aimed at exploring the factors affecting students’ silence in EFL speaking classroom interaction. It used a case study method to get more understanding about phenomena of student silence. This research was taking the first semester students specifically listening and speaking for general purposes class in one of university in Jambi as the data resources in which they were chosen purposively after being observed. Two instruments were utilized to gain the data, (a) observation, and (b) semi-structured interview. In doing the observation, the researcher used observation form to identify the appropriate participants to this research. Interview was conducted using audio recorder to obtain the data concerning the factors of students silent. The findings of this study revealed that the participants remain silent during classroom interaction because of some factors. They are (1) EFL teachers, (2) Students themselves and classmates, (3) Subject matter, (4) Classroom environments. The finding mostly highlighted student’s language proficiency and self-confidence as the caused of those factors. The researcher suggests for the future research to explore more behind their silence and find the solution to overcome silence phenomenon in the classroom interaction.
