Abstract
ABSTRACT Husna, Faradilla. 2023. Evaluating the Materials Used for Teaching: A Case Study in a Higher Education. Thesis. Master of English Education Program. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Universitas Jambi Year 2023/2024. The first supervisor is Drs. Marzul Hidayat, M.A., Ph.D. The second supervisor is Dr. Nunung Fajaryani, S.Pd., M.Pd. Evaluating the materials is crucial in preparing English Language Teaching (ELT) materials, especially in higher Education. It is considered important because the materials serve as the framework for the teaching-learning process that the teachers and students carry out. Therefore, this research aims to evaluate the materials in teaching English to Health Promotion students at Polytechnics of Health in Jambi Province by employed a qualitative method with case study design. Through document analysis, interview and observation the research compelling findings regarding four aspects which had been evaluated, namely; aims, language content, skills and topics. The findings revealed the materials do not match with the aims of the syllabus because the materials emphasize the knowledge, while the aims stated in the syllabus emphasize the attitude such as respecting diversity and others’ opinion. For the language content, the grammars and vocabulary are introduced in language forms which focus on introducing tenses and phrases rather than the language use. The skills only focused on speaking and listening. Meanwhile, reading and writing skills were not well developed for health promotion students. Lastly, the topics of the materials talked about language use in daily contexts, such as introducing our-self, giving direction, etc, in which the materials should be relevant with health since it is students’ background of expertise. Keywords: Material evaluation, Evaluating the materials, English language materials
