Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the strategies used by the English Education Study Program students in learning speaking skills and investigate the language learning strategies used by high and low achievers students in speaking in the second semesters. This was a survey design with a questionnaire as the instrument. There were 32 statements of speaking learning strategies which consisted of three categories of learning strategies proposed by O’Malley and Chamot (1990) and the instrument was adapted from Liao and Chiang (2004). The result of this study showed the students preferred to use all category of that learning strategy at the medium level. However, high achievers were reported using various of language learning strategies (social-affective strategies and cognitive strategeis) than low achievers (metacognitive strategies). The study confirms that learners who have a higher level of English competence will almost certainly apply more strategies in their language learning and it is suggested that students should be trained to be more aware of their own speaking learning strategies.
