Abstract

Abstract The Candlenut tree (Aleurites moluccana (L.) Willd) can grow in various types of soil, including red clay, rocky clay, sand, and limestone. The candlenut tree also does not require a good drainage system. It is quite tolerant to drought and can even thrive in less fertile soil if planted properly with sufficient soil moisture. Candlenut trees can thrive in humid environments, prefer light, and grow as pioneer trees in open areas when rainfall is adequate. Land suitability refers to the appropriateness of a piece of land for a specific use. Specifically, land suitability refers to the suitability of the physical environmental characteristics, namely climate, soil, topography, hydrology, and/or drainage for agricultural activities or specific commodities that are productive. To evaluate the suitability of sloping land for candlenut trees in the Mahau Lestari Forest Farmer Group in Sungai Panoban Village, Jambi Province, this research was conducted. The study was carried out in the Mahau Lestari Forest Farmer Group in Sungai Panoban Village, Jambi Province, on the land cultivated with candlenut trees. The research activities were conducted for 2 months from September to October 2023 using survey methods. Activities included systematic observation, measurement, and recording of various studies that were the object of research. The location for soil sample collection was determined by systematic sampling. The research results showed that in general, the land conditions in the Mahau Lestari Forest Farmer Group have suitable land suitability classes for candlenut cultivation, but there are limiting factors. In SLH 1, the limiting factors are nutrient retention (nr), low pH value, and low values of N and K in available nutrients (na), with the actual condition being marginal (S3), which can be improved to moderately suitable (S2). In SLH 2, the limiting factors are low pH value, nutrient retention (nr), low values of N and K in available nutrients (na), and erosion hazard (eh), with the actual condition being marginal (S3), which can be improved to moderately suitable (S2).
