Abstract
This research aimed to explain the intrinsic and extrinsic factors of students’ motivation in learning vocabulary through using cartoon movies. This research was conducted at one of junior high school in Jambi city. The participants of this research were six students of class VII D. This class was chosen because the students in this class were among the most active compared to the other classes. Several criteria must be considered when selecting participants: 1. Students with good grades, 2. Students with average grades, 3. Students with low grades. This research employed qualitative research. In collecting the data, the researcher used interviews and observation. The data were then analyzed by Miles & Huberman, which consisted of several stages, namely: collecting data, data condensat ion, data display, and drawing conclusion/verification. The results of this research indicated that there were four themes of students’ motivation in learning vocabulary through using cartoon movies: (1) the willingness of students to learn English is more influenced by intrinsic factors, (2) students’ extrinsic factors is barely affected by their familiar environment or friendships, (3) the students think by watching cartoon movies helps them increase their vocabulary, (4) the use of cartoon movies has proven to enhance students’ motivation for learning English.
