Abstract
Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is often accompanied by obesity, characterized by poor body fat distribution and increased visceral fat. This condition can increase the risk of complications, including cardiovascular issues. One of the ways to prevent these complications is through lifestyle modification, such as dietary regulation and fatty acid intake. Methods: This study employed an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The research sample consisted of 109 subjects selected using a purposive sampling method. Data collected included fatty acid intake, measured through a food record questionnaire, body fat percentage, and blood pressure measurements. Results: Among the 109 subjects, 84.4% had saturated fatty acid (SFA) intake, 97.2% had monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) intake, and 63.3% had polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) intake. Additionally, 41.3% had normal body fat composition, while 57% had elevated blood pressure. There was no significant correlation between SFA and PUFA intake with body fat composition (SFA, p-value 0.156; PUFA, p-value 0.118). However, there was a significant correlation between MUFA intake and body fat composition (p-value 0.008). There was no significant correlation between SFA, MUFA, and PUFA intake with blood pressure (SFA, p-value 0.928; MUFA, p-value 0.870; PUFA, p-value 0.370). Conclusion: There is no significant relationship between saturated fatty acid (SFA) or polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) intake and body fat composition in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at Puskesmas Kota Jambi. However, there is a significant relationship between monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) intake and body fat composition in these patients. There is no significant relationship between fatty acid intake and blood pressure in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at Puskesmas Kota Jambi. Keywords: Type 2 diabetes mellitus, fatty acids, body fat composition, blood pressure.
