Abstract

This study is an analysis of the use of taboo words in a TV series titled “Never Have I Ever” and their Indonesian subtitles. What considered taboo is crucially defined by the cultural norm of a place. In this context, this study aims to explore how the meanings of taboo words/phrases are transferred between two culturally distant languages like English and Indonesian. This study was designed using a descriptive qualitative approach. Data of this research included English taboo words/phrases collected from the TV series “Never Have I Ever” from season 1 and their Indonesian subtitles. Data were sorted and classified into the types of taboos defined by a 2006 theory by Allan and Burridge. The analysis was carried out in three steps. Firstly, the meanings of taboos in the source text and their translations were identified by using theories and dictionaries. Secondly, translation strategies were identified by comparing source text data and their translations in the subtitles. In the third step, the analysis was focused on examining whether the meanings of English taboos were retained, lost, or shifted/modified in the Indonesian subtitles of the TV series. There were 20 data of taboo words/phrases identified by the researcher. Ten data were classified into the organs and acts of sex, micturition and defecation type; seven data were categorized as bodies and their effluvia type; three data were classified into diseases, death and killing type. The analysis of translation strategies showed only five out of eight translation strategies were applied in rendering English taboos into the Indonesian subtitles. Translation with more neutral/less expressive words was identified as the most widely-used strategy with twelve occurrences. Translation by using loan word or loan word plus explanation occurred three times; translation by cultural substitution and translation by paraphrasing with unrelated words each occurred two times. Translation by omission occurred once. The results of analysis demonstrated that finding equivalent rendition of taboo words in another language is generally a challenging task.
