Abstract

The purposed of conducting this research was to investigate the students’ perceptions on the use of role play strategy at MAN 2 Muaro Jambi. This research used descriptive qualitative research and its research instruments namely questionnaire and interview. The research participants in this research were 29 students and one English teacher. In obtaining the data, the researcher firstly used questionnaire, which consists of fourteen questions. In this questionnaire, the researcher asked about how the implementation of using role play and what are the students’ perceptions on the use of role play in students’ speaking activity. Secondly, the researcher interviewed the students and teacher to confirm about how the implementation of using role play, and what are the students’ perceptions. Based on the data that researcher found from questionnaire and interview data, the researcher found that students of eleventh grade at MAN 2 Muaro Jambi learned dialogue used role play and the teacher taught with decided teaching materials set the group, select situations and create dialogue, teach the dialogue for role play, practice the dialogue, evaluate and check students’ comprehensions from the dialogue. But the students had negative perceptions. They stated that their feeling in practice speaking used role play were still fear to make mistakes, shy, nervous, not interest to study English, and the students also not self-confidence. There were some problems that made students had negative perceptions. Those problems there was no motivation to learn English. The way of teaching used this strategy given by teacher. And condition in the classroom was not comfortable.
