Abstract
This study investigated the categories of cultural terms in the novel Laskar Pelangi which were translated into English in the novel The Rainbow Troops and the strategies applied in translating those cultural terms . The research questions in this study are: (1) what kind of cultural terms are found in the novel Laskar Pelangi? (2) what are the translation strategies used by the translator to translate the cultural terms in the novel?.This study was a descriptive-qualitative research. The result of the study showed from the total of 41 cultural terms, 11 of them belong to the category of ecology, 13 terms belong to the category of material culture,7 terms belong to the category of social culture,8 terms belong to the category of social organization, and 2 terms belong to the category of gesture and habit. Meanwhile, the strategies of translating the terms, among the thirteen strategies proposed by Newmark (1988), eleven of them were used by the translator. Transference was used 4 times, literal translation was used 9 times, descriptive equivalent was used 4 times, functional equivalent was used 2 times, transposition was used 7 times, note or addition was used 4 times, reduction was used 1 times, naturalization was used 2 times, expansion was used 3 times, couplet was used 3 times and cultural equivalent was used 3 times.
